17. Kaufman

Kaufman was established in 1948 with the county seat of Kaufman.

Both the county and the city were named for David S. Kaufman, who was a diplomat and U.S. representative from Texas.

Kaufman has a number of properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Cameron County is the southernmost county in Texas.

Founded in 1848, it was named after Captain Ewen Cameron,  a soldier in the Texas Revolution.

Cameron County has three different nationally protected areas in or partially in its boundaries.

These include the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge, and Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park.

15. El Paso

It’s located in far west Texas and stands on the Rio Grande across the Mexico-United States border.

El Paso has a strong federal and military presence due to the number of military bases located here.

It was also considered to be one of the top three safest large cities between 1997 and 2014.

Between 2011 and 2014, it actually held the title of the safest city.

The climate of El Paso is between cold desert climate and desert climate, so it has hot summers, little humidity, and cool to mild (dry) winters.

The sun shines in El Paso for 302 days of the year.

That said, there are mountains nearby, and the county does receive snow.

Because El Paso is located in the western region of Texas, it is not included in the Central Time Zone and operates on Mountain Time Zone.

It also has one place on the National Register of Historic Places: the Faulk and Gauntt Building (located in Athens).

13. Nueces

Nueces County is located in the southwest region of the state with a population of 340,223.

Its county seat is Corpus Christi.

The county was named for the Nueces River, which is the southernmost major river in the U.S. that is north of the Rio Grande.

It was named after Isaac Parker, who introduced the bill that established Parker County as a county in 1855.

Parker County also has two high points – Slipdown Mountain and Slipdown Bluff.

6. Bell

During the 2010 census, the population was only 108,372.

However, in 2017, it was designated as one of the nation’s 10 fastest-growing counties.

Some of the rural land features that surround Comal County are the Balcones Escarpment, the rocky hills and canyons of Texas Hill Country, the rolling grasslands of the coastal plains, and the Guadalupe River.

4. Bexar
